Nucor plans $60 million Decatur expansion with 60 jobs
The Alabama project would raise utility pole production as grid investment lifts demand for steel transmission structures.
Nucor plans to invest $60 million in its Towers & Structures facility in Decatur, Alabama, in an expansion expected to create 60 additional jobs, according to an Oct. 20 announcement from Gov. Kay Ivey’s office. The project would increase utility pole production and add laydown and galvanizing-inspection space.
Utilities investing to strengthen and modernize the nation’s power grid are creating strong demand for the facility’s products, Nucor Chair and CEO Leon Topalian said in the announcement. The company considered other states before choosing Decatur.
The planned hiring would add to an Alabama workforce of more than 2,700 people across Nucor’s operations. In Morgan County, the company operates Nucor Steel Decatur, Nucor Tubular Products and Nucor Towers & Structures. The Towers & Structures operation, announced in 2023, manufactures steel utility structures supporting electric transmission and critical infrastructure.
Nucor is eligible for state support through Jobs Act credits and Alabama Industrial Development Training assistance.
