Pfizer plans cuts at two North Carolina manufacturing plants
The reductions affect facilities in Sanford, which focuses on vaccines and advanced biologics, and Rocky Mount, a sterile injectables site, as Pfizer pursues a cost-saving program.
Pfizer notified employees Oct. 20 of planned job cuts at its Sanford and Rocky Mount manufacturing plants, ABC11 reported, bringing the company's efficiency push to North Carolina operations that make vaccines, advanced biologics and sterile injectable medicines.
The cuts are planned for plants with different specialties. Sanford focuses on vaccines and advanced biologics manufacturing, including gene therapies, while Rocky Mount is a major sterile injectable manufacturing site, according to ABC11.
Headcount reductions are part of a series of manufacturing efficiency evaluations, a Pfizer spokesperson told BioSpace. The spokesperson said Pfizer regularly reviews its manufacturing network to align capacity use with patient needs, projected product demand and long-term business objectives. In a separate statement to ABC11, Pfizer said it would keep employees informed and provide support services.
The cuts come during a restructuring program whose savings target Pfizer increased by $2.5 billion in August, BioSpace reported. Much of the savings is expected to come from technology and simplification efforts across manufacturing, research and development, and commercial operations.
